CELEBRATING WOMANHOOD

Today the 8th of March is the International Women's day set aside every year to mark the enormous contribution of women to mankind.
One may ask why there's a day to celebrate just women. We've actually come a long way from when and why this day was set up in the first place. Back then, women didn't have the rights to vote, they could not hold public offices and didn't have equal employment rights as men. Now, with more women being able to do all that and hold seats even in parliaments, and even go as far as being head of state as in Liberia, there has really been progress.

Asides equal rights in politics and employment, some women still suffer a great ton of abuse (forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual cats). In some parts of the world, Nigeria inclusive, rape convictions are still very low. Women experience abuse at the hands of their partners, relatives and employers.

As we celebrate the achievements of women all over the world, we are however still called to pay attention to the plights of women who are still fighting the injustice against a particular gender. In Nigeria, some extremists don't deem it fit to send the girl child to school. It's as if a girl with a book and a mind of her own scares them so much they would rather subject her to forced marriage/slavery and confine her to kitchen and child bearing duties. Some people still fail to realize that women are pure GOLD. They are like rich untapped human natural resources full of talent and strong will. All of us can attest that in a household, the one that gets something done is the woman. Women are the real architects of society. Now we're not saying they are better than men; but women are no worse than men.

So I say this to every woman out there still fighting an unfair system and wanting to be more than just a gender, FORGE ON!! Do not let the fear of men being intimidated by you hold you back. Be a force to reckon with. According to Chimamanda Adichie, any type of man that will be intimidated by who you are and what you stand for is exactly the type of man you should have no interest in. Gender roles have created the ideation that women can be a certain way, do certain jobs and should not aspire to be greater than their male counterparts.  Do not let this mess with your drive. Aim higher. Love yourself because no man can love you better. You are everything you've got.

Happy International Women's day to every independent woman making it on her own, every woman drawing strength from her pain and struggles, every woman giving strength to others and being a strong support system, every woman trying to make a difference in the world. Much respect to the WOMAN for being beautifully made and having the patience to understand situations with a heart full of love and care.

Someone better wish me the same here oh. LOL. Talk with Krystal :)
