IF YOU THOUGHT SOURSOP COULD CURE CANCER, YOU THOUGHT WRONG

SourSop a green prickly juicy and tasty fruit with the scientific name "Annona muricata" is a very common fruit produced in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Northern America and all tropical parts of Africa especially Eastern Nigeria, Plateau and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to claims from different ethnicities, the fruit also known as Graviola fruit has the capacity of curing cancer. Growing up as kids we always heard our folks advise us to take a lot of it to prevent any form of cancer from developing in our systems.

It's sad to say that most of their claims were most likely hoax as no proven clinical trials or evidence show it's an anti-cancer agent. Sour sop may probably do one more harm than good if consumed too much. The idea that Soursop can fight cancer effectively started after a research at Purdue University's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The research concluded that the active components of the tree are a unique phytochemical substances known as annonaceous acetogenins, which MAY have chemotherapeutic potential, especially with regard to multi drug-resistant cancer cells. But these tests were only confined to test tubes, no large scale clinical trials were conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of Graviola for treating cancer. Therefore, there is no significant evidence to show that Soursop works as a cure for cancer.

Studies show that use of Soursop can have certain adverse effects in some people, especially movement disorders and nerve damage that is similar to Parkinson's disease, which is due to the very high concentration of annonacin. Graviola also has few other side effects like lowering the blood pressure, so it should not be taken by people with low blood pressure or heart complications. The antimicrobial properties of Soursop can also kill beneficial bacteria on the skin, in the vagina and gut, which can lead to infections in long term use.

Despite safety concerns, graviola is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites including leishmaniasis, a disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of sand fleas; herpes and cough. It is as an emetic to cause vomiting and to empty the bowels. Some people use graviola to help them relax. Graviola is also used on the skin in the treatment of arthritis.
