Tim Duncan’s legendary NBA career has come to an end nearly two decades after it began, and it happened in the most 'Tim Duncan' way possible: Via a standard-issue press release put out by the team.
This Legend's humility is beyond words. What, you thought Tim Duncan was going to turn his retirement into some kind of modern media spectacle ? Remember Kobe ?
The San Antonio Spurs big man, who won five NBA championships during his 19 pro seasons, officially announced his retirement Monday.
The 40-year-old also won three NBA Finals MVP awards and was an eight-time member of the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team.
During Duncan’s career, San Antonio boasted a .710 winning percentage, which, according to the Spurs, was the best of any team in the four major American sports leagues over that span.
Only Kobe Bryant, whose career also came to an end this year after 20 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers, played more NBA seasons for a single franchise in league history. He & Duncan are easily the greatest players of their era, both winning a combined 10 titles, 9 of which came within a 12 year span (1999 - 2010), with Tim Duncan having the first & last of these titles (1999 & 2014).
Even if Duncan successfully ghosted the NBA for now, he’ll definitely be seen again when he’s inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
