Wow ! Serena Williams’ Olympics are over.
The owner of 22 Grand Slam singles titles and a 2012 gold medal, Williams made a stunning exit from Rio on Tuesday, 6-4, 6-3 at the hands 20th-ranked Ukranian Elina Svitolina in the women’s singles Round of 16.
Having already lost in doubles with her sister, Venus, Williams heads home without any hardware for the first time in her Olympic career.
Something clearly wasn’t right with Williams all night. After losing the first set without much of a fight and getting down a break in the second, it appeared she might have some energy for the first time after getting the break back to make it 3-3.
Williams, however, subsequently lost her next service game, sending an inexplicable five double-faults into the net to hand the break to Svitolina.
